Overview
Educational value
In the wake of the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020, it became apparent that a range of new skills needed to be cultivated for entrepreneurs and folks in managerial roles within the creative industry to help their businesses survive. Discussing with our key stakeholders, we decided to create a series of talks and workshops focused on developing these new skills. A series of articles, both aggregated from academic journals and put together by thought leaders, led us to creating the programme that was delivered. The programme focused on two main paths: learning practical skills (pitching remotely, business planning) and soft skills (resilience, learning to manage impostor syndrome) needed in the light of COVID-related adaptations to the workspace, all the while making important business connections with our mentors and between each of the participants.

Quotes
“An engaging series of webinars that breaks down topics/issues/opportunities facing creative practitioners.” - Dan, Founder
“Kayla presented an inspiring webinar that demonstrated and emphasised the importance of bringing confidence and authenticity to public speaking.” - Holly Pickering, Freelance Art Director
“As someone who suffers from impostor syndrome, it was reassuring to know that lots of other people experience it too, and that there are ways to deal with it and minimise how much it impacts your day-to-day life.” - Becky Saunders, Co-Founder, Fat Familiar
“We decided to set up our company in October 2019. We’re still very new, because at uni we learn how to make games but we don’t learn about how to run a studio or how to pitch, talk to investors or how to manage our business finances. This is why I felt like these talks were particularly interesting. At each talk I wrote lots of notes which I then passed to my team and told them to read them.” - Becky
“I’m a freelance UI [User Interface] Artist. Because I built my own business, I had to learn how to sell myself to find work, and there’s a lot of anxiety around that. I always thought of the Impostor Syndrome as not having confidence in your abilities, so the main thing in the talk - that there are different types of impostor syndrome - really helped me correlate how the impostor syndrome relates to me. I’ve already been using the stuff from the workshop, reminding myself that although I’m good at selling myself, that’s a completely different thing than actually doing the job. Nobody expects you to be 100% all the time, so that gives me permission to make mistakes, which allows me to grow.” - Edd
